Look Fabulous over 40 and Beyond

I believe that beauty is ageless and that no matter what your number is, it’s the way you carry yourself that keeps you looking beautiful! Many of you lovely ladies ranging in age from early 40’s all the way up to 70’s, have been writing to me lately asking for makeup advice. There are definitely some must-do tricks and some must-never-do-again tips that will keep you looking amazing so you can carry yourself with beautiful pride into your future.

Must-Do Tricks

1. Choose A Hydrating Liquid Foundation. A great foundation is absolutely key as we mature because our skin becomes discolored from things like rosacea, sunspots and blotchiness. Applying a liquid foundation will smooth out the appearance of the skin, restoring dewiness and taking years off your look. Blend it on with a non-latex sponge for a light coverage and make sure to cover your eyelids as well (this will act like a shadow base).

2. Switch to Cream Blush. Most powder blushes can start to look dry and chalky on skin that is older so using cream blush on the apples of your cheeks creates a moist natural flushed effect. It will brighten the face for a more youthful look. The best way to apply a cream blush is by tapping it high on your cheeks using your pointer and middle finger. If you feel you have applied too much, simply buff it down with a non-latex sponge. My current favorite is the CC+ Vitality Brightening Cream Blush.

3. Carmindize Your Face With Highlighter. If you want to achieve that radiant glow from your youth “Carmindizing” your face will do the trick. I coined this phrase years ago on the show What Not To Wear and now it’s also called “Strobbing.”You want to apply a cream or sheer powder highlighter that is pearlescent not glittery in a champagne hue under the eyebrows, on the inside corners of the eyes and on tops of the cheekbones for stunning fresh faced luminosity.

4. Fill In Your Eye Brows. Brows begin to become sparse over time and you will want to make sure they stay looking full and healthy. Nothing says age like thin anorexic looking eyebrows so don’t over pluck. If they have begun to fade a bit over time, try a brow growth serum to restore them. If they just won’t grow back then a good brow pencil is the best way to bring them back to life. Choose one with a super fine tip so the color feathers on and looks natural. I use the Mac Eye Brows Pencil.

5. Thicken up your lash line. You want to define your eyes during the day without
making them look overdone in your 40’s and beyond so choose a chocolate brown eyeliner pencil that is waterproof so it won’t run. Apply along the roots of the eyelashes in small connecting dashes and smooth over with a Q-Tip or an angle brush for a softer effect. Then finish with a coat of black smudge-free mascara on top lashes. Try L’Oreal Paris Infallible Never Fail Eyeliner for an inexpensive solution.

Must-Never-Do-Again Tips

1. Say No To Powder Foundations. Powder foundation will weigh heavy on older skin showing off fine lines and wrinkles much more than a hydrating liquid foundation will. Stay away from any powders that are highly pigmented if you want to look fresh.

2. Stop Using Dark Matte Lipsticks. This will just make your lips recede and as we age our lips tend to get a bit smaller anyway so you do not want to help that issue along. Instead choose moist matte or lightly luminous lip colors in lighter and brighter shades that will enhance your lip shape and show off your gorgeous smile.

3. Stay Away From Opaque Dark Eye Shadows and Liquid Eyeliners. Dark opaque eye shadows tend to make eyes look smaller and liquid eyeliners can look messy and not stay exact on the delicate skin around the eye that is not as firm as it once was. Instead use neutral colored sheer eye shadows to define eyes and switch to eyeliners in pencil, powder or gel form for a more blended softer look that stays put. My favorite eye shadows are the quads from Youngblood.

4. Ban Glitter And Frost From Your Life. Super shimmery glitter and frost in any of your makeup products from lip colors to bronzers will work against you now. Those chunky shimmery particles will only settle into fine lines and wrinkles making them more noticeable. That does not mean you must steer clear of all radiant, glowing products. Instead opt for pearlescent finishes that will highlight the skin, bouncing light off of it, making it look more polished.

5. No More Waterproof Mascara. We lose lashes as we age and waterproof mascara can be very harsh to our flirty fringe when we try and take it off at night. It can cause us to lose even more lashes, which is not a good thing. To avoid smudging and flaking go for the new tube technology mascaras that never smear yet wash off gently and easily at night.

Welcome back Carmindy from a devoted Carmindy user in Canada!! So excited to read the blog and find out that you are back! I am so totally lost without your Game Changer foundation – I am turning 69 shortly and when I used it along with your other amazing products, no one would believe my age. You are an inspiration to all of us – so thrilled with this news! Thank you, thank you!

I’ve been a fan since your WNTW days. Thanks so much….finally something for us over 40 group. I’m over 60…over 65! I’ve tried several eyebrow products. The best, for me is MAC eyeshadow – wheat a is the color. You brush it on w an angled brush and then feather it our w/ a clean unused mascara brush/wand, Also, I mix foundation (Game Changer) w moisturizer. You get a moister, more natural appearance. I have quite a bit of your Sally Hansen line – all the eyeshadow trios. They last forever and are so subtle

I am wondering when we will be able to purchase Carmindy’s game changer foundation and primer again

Or, what other product would Carmindy recommend because every other product I have tried pales in comparison to Carmindy’s.

Hi Carmindy…..I love…love..love the way you apply makeup. I was so envious of all the women that got make overs on WNTW.

Now here’s my problem that is causing me to not feel good about myself…. hooded eyes. I don’t know how to apply makeup that not make this problem so obvious. I would so appreciate any solutions and directions to help solve this problem

I bought a wonderful Carmindy foundation online last year. I have used it all and can’t remember who I ordered it from. Can anyone tell me who carries Carmindy & CO products?

  6. Janet

I love your game changer foundation and cannot get it anywhere. Could you please advise where I can get your fantastic, irreplaceable foundation from or if it will be available anytime soon, as I just can’t find any foundation on the market as good as your game changer foundation.

Try Beautycounter mascara, they don’t use over 1400 toxic ingredients, a great lengthening and while not waterproof has great staying power!

I have wrinkles from chemo, never had them before, what can I use to hide them on the side of my cheeks, I only always used bronzer,

Try easy gentle BB cream or tube concealer. I’m checking the webs for good makeup techniques for my mom. Any ideas?

As you grow older, you lose a significant amount of fat on your face. Instead of taking this negatively, use this to your advantage. Rub your blush along the highest points of your cheekbones to make your bone structure stand out.

I wish they would bring “What Not to Wear” back to TLC. I learned so much about dressing, doing my hair, and applying makeup from that show and it was so motivating. I really miss it and it would be interesting to see how they would make people over for the new decade we are currently in.

I would also like to see lipstick that would look nature on more mature skin and WOULD REALLY LAST and look like you were wearing it. My husband hates to have lipstick all over him and some of the longer wear types of lipstick can be very drying and too matte—making you look even older!

I am in my mid 60’s and have overplucked my brows since teen years and now I have a sparse single row of tiny hairs extending from a clump of inner hair. With no brow makeup, I have bald areas and the sparseness is laughable. I now use Smartbrow to even them out a bit and you can swim in it too. I have been thinking about Permanent Makeup for my blonde brows and wonder if anyone is a fan.

Now more than any other time there are going to be more of us in our 60’s and early 70’s wanting to look our best in makeup. We still care and still want to be cute. Best moisturizers with SPF protection? We are getting those silly little skin cancers. Best makeup with SPF? Best eye creams? I need a tutorial of makeup for over 60!

  16. Cheryl

I have heavily hooded eyes but am a you 60 that people always take for 50. How can I make up my eyes without that clogged up look?

  17. Dita Nicole

do you ever come to Los Angeles to give a Make up demonstration or private consultation. I have thousands of makeup bought at Neimans,Saks don’t really know how to use all. Thank you Rita

  18. Debbie Smith

I can’t find your products anymore with Sally Hansen. Have they been discontinued? I am 53 and looking for good products but inexpensive ones. I need it all! Foundation and I am light, blush, eye shadows. I really had a favorite lipstick that was by Estee lauder but it has been discontinued. It was called tiramisu. I have combination skin and like a light look. If you could a give me brands to look for that would be great. I miss getting to see all the cast of What Not to Wear. That was my favorite show!

Thanks for sharing the information, I am indeed looking for this information. Looks like I found good information on this article. Nice website 🙂

I’m late to the party so sorry if this has already been addressed. I have hooded eyes and shimmery shadows just don’t work on me. Everything I read says I should only wear mattes. They don’t have to be dark, necessarily, but the recommended palette contains shimmer and frost.
