The 411 For Fall

Yes, it's true, fall has arrived and with it some romantic beauty trends that are universally flattering for all women and all ages. It's time to put away your bronzers and summer shades and go for romance and change things up a bit. There are three main trends this season that I think look great on everyone. The first trend is the modern red lip. It is oh-so-in right now but a lot of us are just afraid to go there. The key to pulling this look off and making it modern is to try sheer shades of red not opaque and go ultra natural with the rest of your makeup. Think the 40's with women applying a dab of red lipstick on an otherwise bare face. There are so many new sheer formulas of lipstick, lip tints and balms or lip-gloss so your mouth will never look overdone or painted on. Follow these easy steps to achieve this look:

  1. Apply a sheer foundation on a moisturized and protected face. Remember just because summer is over does not mean you can put away the sunscreen.
  2. Dab on concealer only where needed.
  3. Sweep on a sheer cream highlighter to the top of your cheekbones and under your brow bone. If you are using powder highlighter swap steps 3 and 4.
  4. Dust a translucent powder across the forehead, down the bridge and sides of your nose to your cheeks, across the chin and across the eyelids.
  5. Apply 2 coats of black mascara.
  6. Swirl on a peachy neutral blush on the cheeks very lightly.
  7. Dab on a sheer red lip color. Use a fingertip to push the color into the lips so they are tinted and not screaming RED. If your lips have fine lines around them and color tends to bleed use a nude lip pencil first to seal in the color.

Having well groomed brows are important for this look so be sure to keep them in the best possible shape.

The next trend for fall is the color of pale gold. Bronzes and coppers are strictly summer but pale gold looks amazing on fall and winter skin. It will keep skin looking radiant and will give you the little sparkle that skin lacks in the cooler months. Whether you use pale gold lip-gloss, eye shadow or highlight, the key to this look is using it in 1 or 2 places only not all over. Some easy pale gold choices:
  1. Sweep a pale gold eye shadow from the lash line to the brow bone for an all over eye glow.
  2. Dab a pale golden liquid shimmer on top of your cheekbones after foundation and do not powder over it for an all day radiant look. It gives the illusion of tight youthful skin.
  3. Pair a smoky eye with a pale gold lip for a sexy evening look.
  4. To open the eyes, dab a pale gold highlight on the inside corner of the eyes and on the center of the eyelid.
  5. Apply your everyday lip color, then dot a little pale gold gloss in the center of the lower lip to make your lips look larger.
Renaissance beauty is big for fall and a look every woman wants to have. Rosebud lips and cheeks and soft doe eyes make this look a favorite of mine because it makes me think of romance. It is as simple to do as "The 5 Minute Face" and does not take a lot of work. The way to Renaissance:
  1. Apply the first 4 steps like you did for the modern red lip look. Foundation, concealer, powder and highlight.
  2. Sweep on a Bambi brown matte eye shadow from the lash line to the crease. Then use a Q-tip to smudge the same color under the lower lash line very softly.
  3. Apply black mascara.
  4. Dust on a soft rose blush on the apples of the cheeks using a large powder brush and swirling in circles.
  5. Slick on a moisturizing creamy rose colored lipstick.

Michelle Rodburn from San Diego, California writes:
Every season I see new makeup looks in the magazines but are they for everybody? I have red a hair and freckles so how can I pull off “the smokey eye” without looking scary?

Carmindy:
Well Michelle, it’s all about the colors you choose. You can try the new looks but just take into consideration your coloring. If the smoky eye you read about is with grey eye shadow than you need to use warm brown eye shadow instead to master the look perfectly for your skin tone. Also use a lighter hand when trying the look. The magazine will have a more fashion forward version so to translate it into real life you want to apply with a lighter hand. Every season there are many new looks to play with so go for one that compliments your features.

Sherie Watts from Atlanta, Georgia writes:
Please tell me the name of the silver can foundation you spray onto a sponge in every episode of “What Not To Wear”. I have never seen it before.

Carmindy:
Hi Sherie, the foundation is Era Face by Classified Cosmetics available at www.classifiedcosmetics.com. It is an oil-free foundation that I like to apply with a non-latex sponge that I dip into a little moisturizer first. I dab the extra moisturizer off just so the sponge is damp, then spray the foundation onto to it and apply to the whole face. You can flip the sponge over and use the dry side to stipple the foundation on areas that need extra coverage.

Maria Gonzales from Toronto, Canada writes:
How do I keep my under eye concealer from getting cakey and settling into my fine lines at the end of every day? I come home looking tired and older then I really am.

Carmindy:
Maria, it sounds like you are using the wrong product or too much of the product to get rid of your darkness. I find that by applying a lot less concealer but in a bright or light reflecting formula you will bounce light off the darkness creating a more rested and natural appearance. Try Benefit Eyebright (my personal favorite) after your foundation but before powder and swipe on under the eyes then blend in with your ring finger for an instant eye lift. A thicker concealer is needed for serious dark circles but choose one that reflects light like Stila Illuminating Concealer. Dust on the smallest amount of sheer translucent powder to set. Do not apply powder under your eyes again all day, for this will only make it look cakey and dry.
