The Best Summer Makeup

Summer is here and getting a hot summer look is easier than you think. You will want to lighten up the formulas, but choose ones that will withstand the heat and humidity. There are three basic, universal looks this season that any woman can wear. The first look is the Bronzed Beach Babe look. Whether you just swirl a bronzer on the cheeks or go for a bronzy-gold eye shadow and lip color, you want to think sheer and not heavy to look tropical, not tragic. I like to start off with a nice, light application of tinted moisturizer, and then apply a long-wearing aerosol bronzer. Spray the bronzer onto a sponge and dab it on the temples, along the hairline, and under the cheekbones in a “C” formation. This will give you that perfect, sun-kissed look. Now line the eyes with a bronze waterproof eyeliner pencil as close as possible to the roots of the eyelashes. Use a pale gold highlight eye shadow under the brow and on the inside corner of the eyes. Black waterproof mascara should follow. Finally, slick on a beautiful sheer, bronzy-gold lip color. The second look is the California Coral look. Coral is always a universal shade and looks beautiful with a faux tan. Apply a sheer powder blush in a pinky coral on the apples of the cheeks and try a lipstick or lip-gloss in a similar shade. Go easy on the eyes so they don’t compete with this bright bold summer color. I also LOVE coral on the nails, so paint on a polish that will look great with a sweet pair of sandals. Remember that no matter what polish you put on your toes, the feet need to look pretty. Apply a daily foot cream to keep them from getting cracked and dry in the hot summer. The last look is the Sea Goddess. Think of watercolors or the ocean. Aquatic marine colors like sea foam green, blue, opal, and turquoise can look lovely when applied with a light hand across the eyelid from the lash line to the crease. Use eyeliner in the same color family, and use waterproof black mascara. Go easy on the cheeks and lips, keeping them soft in sandy pink tones to keep the face balanced.

Suggestions please for a smoky eye (for a wedding)? I have almond shaped medium brown eyes and really want eyes that will pop. Can you recommend eye shadow colors as well as step-by-step application tips? Also, I know with a smoky eye I should do a natural lip color. Can you recommend a good brand of lip gloss that will not need a lot of reapplying for wedding photos?
THANKS!

Carmindy:
If you go with a smoky eye for your wedding day make sure not to choose heavy, dark eye shadows like black or charcoal grey. Instead play with colors like shimmering burgundy browns and purpley taupes. These shades create the smoky look but will be more polished and sophisticated and less rock ‘n’ roll than darker colors. First, line your eyes on the top and bottom lash line with a dark eyeliner in black or chocolate brown. Next, sweep a shimmering burgundy brown eye shadow across the lid from the lash line to the crease and also under the lower lash line, softening the eyeliner. Now sweep a purpley taupe eye shadow into the crease and follow with a champagne shimmer under the brow bone and on the inside corner of the eyes. Make sure to wear black waterproof mascara on top and bottom lash line. For lips, line with a nude colored lip liner like Guerlain’s “Beige Rose” and fill in the lips with it. Next, apply a rose beige lipstick like Givenchy Rouge Interdit Lipstick in “Beige Champagne”. Follow with a light gloss in the center of the lower lip. Try Body and Soul Lip Jewels in NYDD.

Traditional liquid foundation always looks like too much on my face. I always see Carmindy use spray foundations and I was wondering what a couple good brands would be?

Carmindy:
Well Darlene, it seems that you like a more natural feel and the spray foundation may be a bit too much for you. I would recommend a tinted moisturizer with an SPF of 15 or higher. This way you will have protection, coverage, and moisturizer in one light and easy application. Some great brands are Lorac ProtecTINT SPF 30, Cover Girl CG Smoothers SPF 15 Tinted Moisture and Mineral Fusion Cosmetics Sheer Tint.

What liquid brow product do you use on What Not to Wear and where do I purchase it?

Carmindy:
I love the Makeup Forever Brow Correctors because they are waterproof and look really natural. Simply add a drop to the back of your hand and then feather on with a stiff angle brush. It is perfect in the summer heat!
