The Green Beauty Goddess

When it comes to organic, natural and non-toxic skin care nobody curates it better than the beautiful Larissa Thompson co-founder of Onda Beauty. A fellow boho beach girl who loves natural beauty Larissa and I have been kindred spirits for years. We met working together in the magazine world (she used to be a fashion editor) but her love for travel, health, wellness and organic skincare lead her down an authentic path of wanting to share all the best green goodies out there.

She recently launched her new online store (with a NYC boutique on the way) with Aussie biz partner Sarah Bryden-Brown. Onda Beauty is more than an online store. It’s a luxury botanical boutique for discovering a healthier way to care for your skin by offering top-of-the-line green products. As someone who is not 100% green myself I had a few questions for Larissa about going straight to Mother Earth for my skin care and was lucky enough to scour her Onda Beauty closet testing out just about everything I could get my hands on.

Carmindy: For women who have never used all-natural skin care before what would be the first product they should try?

Larissa: Definitely try an all-natural deodorant. Regular deodorants contain aluminum, which MAY be linked to breast cancer. Better to use an all-natural and non-toxic deodorant to be safe not sorry. I have tried a lot of different versions and not all of them work but Onda Beauty carries one I think works the best.

Carmindy: How many years have you been using all-natural skin care and do you really see a difference?

Larissa: I have been using natural beauty products for many years but only over the last 2 years I would say I’m 95% all-natural. My skin has never looked better. The dry patches are gone, my skin tone is much more even and my complexion is glowing. There are a few beauty products that I use that are not 100% natural but life is all about balance. It’s what you do most of the time that makes the difference.

Carmindy: Why all-natural? What is wrong with synthetic?

Larissa: Some harsh synthetic products contain bad chemicals, which act like an irritant to the skin. Irritation leads to redness, dry patches, breakouts, etc. Synthetics can also potentially lead to illness such as inflammatory disease, reproductive and developmental issues and cancer. Up to 65% of what you put on your skin can be absorbed in 26 seconds so you want those ingredients to be good for you.

Carmindy: I feel the food industry got the memo first about eating clean, organic, non-GMO foods for living a healthier lifestyle. There was a boom of new and old companies alike that began creating a wealth of good-for-you options. Would you say the beauty space is finally catching up?

Larissa: Yes and it’s also about living a holistic lifestyle all around. The food we eat, the exercise and meditation we do and the products we put on our skin all play a part. That doesn’t mean you don’t have your cheats like the creamer in your coffee you can’t live without or one product you covet. Do the best you can do and take it one step at a time if you need to.

After scrubbing, slathering, swiping and spritzing on Onda’s offerings for a week, I’ve compiled a list of my top 10 favorites that now I’m totally addicted to.

1. Edible Beauty Express: Bloom Of Youth Infusion Mask

Give yourself an at-home spa treatment with this bamboo mask infused with exotic botanicals. The mixture of these active ingredients along with hyaluronic acid will plump, refine and illuminate the skin restoring that youthful glow. $49.00

2. Agent Nateur Holi (Rose) #4 Natural Déoderant

Okay, so this was my first attempt trying an all-natural deodorant made from coconut and other essential oils and I must say it worked for me. Now I’m not a sweaty person so the fact that it does not contain an anti-perspirant situation was not a big deal. If you do sweat a lot this might not be for you but I loved the fresh scent and the fact after a long day and solid work out I still had a hint of roses under the arms. $19.00

3. Olio E Osso No. 1 Balm in Clear

This is my new makeup bag must-have. A clear all-over beauty balm made from nourishing olive oil. I have been using this versatile balm on my lips, under eyes, elbows, hands and even used it to tame my split ends. It is perfect for the dry winter months. $28.00

4. Hannes Dóttir Mineral Mist

This amazing Icelandic skin care company infuses all of its products with rich activated minerals from the Volcanic Fjords within the country. When I shook this bottle to spark the minerals and sprayed my face I literally felt a burst of cool energy on my face. What a refreshing and illuminating experience. $45.00

5. Bottega Organica Illuminate Eye Contour Cream

I’ve tried hundreds of eye creams over the years as a beauty expert from high-end luxury lines to the basic drug store brands and I’m usually always disappointed. Not this time. I was so impressed with this rich cushiony eye cream that I decided to apply it all over my face too. It is filled with natural botanicals like wild carrot, rosemary, horse chestnut, cucumber and arnica. The next morning I was puff-free and the lines around my eyes were barely visible. $145.00

6. Jao Goē Oil All Over Body Oil

Do your body a favor and order this immediately. I slathered this Tahitian Manoi body oil (that comes out of the tube more like a cream) on before bed and woke up with the softest skin that smelled like heaven. I kept annoying everyone the next day on a photo shoot asking people to touch my skin because I couldn’t believe how smooth I was. It contains 28 plant, fruit and flower oils and butters, which explains it. $48.00

7. Yarok Feed Your Volume Shampoo and Conditioner

My hair has been getting thinner as I’ve gotten older so I always find myself searching for hair care that delivers maximum volume. Most products I use just dry out my hair or weigh it down but I found with Yarok it left it feeling full, healthy and alive. $14.00

8. Herbivore Coco Rose Body Polish

So what do you get in the shower when you mix organic virgin coconut oil and delicately floral Moroccan rose? A smooth exfoliated body that is so highly moisturized that there is no need to put on additional body lotion when you dry off. I love a 2-in-1 that saves time. $36.00

9. Herbivore Bamboo Charcoal Cleansing Bar Soap

I know everyone loves a body wash but I still like good old fashion soap in the shower. This pure soap uses bamboo charcoal to deeply cleanse and detoxify the skin drawing out impurities and toxins deep within pores. This bar is also great for oily or acne prone skin. $12.00

$19 for deodorant?! That’s insane…this industry continues to rip women off with products that oversell and outrageous prices.

I have to agree. I’m from CT I pay 14.99 for 3 tubes at BJ’s club; about $5 a tube. Try using EWG’s Skin Deep Database to find the natural beauty products you want.

  2. Kala

Aha moments! Mahalo Carmindy for turning us on to ONDA. I’d MUCH rather pay $19 for amazing deodorant than chance Alzheimer’s or cancer!!! If everyone would look at the big picture this world would be a better healthier place.

Good products with good ingredients are expensive to make so of course they are expensive to sell is better to have two or threee good products that work than 10 or 12 that don’t .

    Carmindy,
I love all the information. I am going to try a couple of products.
I do use a aluminum free deodorant, but would love to try the one you mention.

Thanks for sharing this! I have a tumor and have been using and searching for all non-toxic products. I have changed my diet to fight with food and have changed my environment and how I treat my body. I am so happy to know your recommendations! It helps to know what to get inch by inch. Meaning I’m gathering what I can as I can afford it. It is so worth it to me even if I only have a minimal amount of things. I still love girly things & enjoy the feeling of a nice cream, etc. It is part of self-care for me. I tossed out all of my old toxic makeup and skincare. Everything! I so agree that everything we put on and in our bodies can either promote life or lead us closer to sickness. I’m learning that even our words and thoughts have such power. Thank you for your post and your beautiful light! You’re an inspiration!

protecting your skin is very important. Wear hat apply bodylotion while going out even don’t forget to give your eyes the same level of sun protection. Don’t go out without sunglasses make sure your sunglasses are UV protected, there are many sunglasses distributors selling sunglasses in bulk like http://www.citysunglass.com, Ray-Ban. Where you can get your UV protected sunglasses at very affordable price. Even frequently wash your eyes with cold water, it really helps. Hope it is useful.

I care for my skin very much. But can’t ignore the fact that personal care products are costly. This monetary matter bothered me a lot while browsing. And then a friend recommended me aplava. It was really good to shop with them, and yes I used aplava coupons while making an order. Suggesting you guys do the same. Use – http://www.couponsji.in/offer/brand/Aplava
